VOIP poor quality for a business with 30 people?

Asked by: 29 views , , ,

In a company with 30 people. The voip seems to be good at non-traffic hours, but once we all seem to get on the phones the quality goes way down…Like the volume is too low, or it breaks up, or it makes static sounds…Any suggestions? I know its probably the internet, but its a seperate serve3r and I can’t test it. Like..we just have a seperate company who handles the internet for the voip. We have a private server for our internet…so phones and computers are not related.

Assuming your VoIP server is using its own dedicated Internet pipe, then the main potential bottleneck is your ISP "upload" speed. As upload speed is typically less than your download speed, this is the usual limiting factor.

Worst case scenario of 30 simultaneous users on the phone at once would require approximately 3.3 MBps – that’s 3.3 MegaBytes per second.

This is assuming you are using a high bandwidth VoIP Codec like G.711u or PCMU which use approximately 110 Kbps per channel over Ethernet.

So, I guess this is the first variable to consider – upload speed.
